Q

“Puk–kwaw–cah” sings the Gambel’s Quail (Callipepla gambelii) from its perch on the mesquite tree branch. The plump bird with the black, curved plume on its chestnut–colored head nests on the ground protected by desert shrubs. The chicks are able to run as soon as they hatch and the covey stays together until the young are grown. The quail eats seeds, cactus fruits, and mistletoe berries during the winter while the young feast primarily on insects during the summer. The Gambel’s Quail can endure dehydration when water is scarce.

Quail starts with the letter Q the desert bird with the feathery crest.

It travels in flocks called coveys and lays up to twenty eggs in its nest.
